Generations of Operating System

As we all Know that Operating  Systems have  been evolved  over  the  years,we  will be looking  at  the  successive  generations  of computer  to see what their operating  system look like

0TH Generation

Well in this generation refer  to  the  period  of development  of computing which  predated the  commercial production  and sale of Computer  equipment
Here Individual user was responsible  for  all machine  set  up and  operation and subsequent  clean up and
preparation  of  the next user
This System was clearly  inefficient  and dependent

1ST Generation(1951-1956)

The First Generation Computer is composed of  Vaccum Tubes . At the same time the development  of Programming Languages was moving away from the basic Machine language first to assembly languageand later to procedure oriented languages like FORTRAN.

2ND Generation (1956-1964)

The  Second Generation of computer hardware was literally characterised by transistors replacing vaccum tubes. Significant use of random access devices appeared in this generation.
Program processing for the most part was provided by the large centralized computers operated under
mono-programmed batch processing operating system.

3RD Generation (1964-1979)

The third generation officially began in April 1964 when IBM'S announcement  of  its  System/360 family of computers. This era mark with the use of IC(Integrated Circuits) which yeilded significant advantage in both speed and economy

4TH Generation(1979- Present)

The  Fourth Generation is Characterized by  the apperance of Personal Computers and workstation.
VLSI(Very Large Scale Integration)  with its capacity  of  containing thousands of transistors on a  small chip made possible  the dvelopment  of desktop  computers
